Time management-
Peak performance, cost effectiveness, overtime, shifts, duty roasters, staff allocation, and crisis management, Effects of inter and intra departmental communication and co-ordination on performance.

Peak Performance: The ability to do one?s best, in one?s best physical state.

Peak Performance occurs when activities are done to ensure that goals are consistently being met in an effective and efficient manner. Peak Performance can focus on ensuring consistent performance of the organization, a department, processes to build a product or service, employees, etc.

Peak Performance in the current scenario:
The Indian hospitality industry's rapid growth is being derailed owing to high attrition and fickle loyalty of its most important resource -people. Today the hotel appears to be a punishing environment, it demands exceptional performance from employees, while promising great rewards, career opportunities and job enrichment. The skill sets required by an employee have evolved over the years, transforming their linear roles to multi-functional operations.

Ensuring Peak Performance
?        Motivational Techniques like performance appraisals, rewards, incentives, perks, benefits.
?        Good working environment, supportive colleagues, encouraging & understanding supervisors
?        Delegating challenges & new tasks.
?        Participation in events, contests etc.
?        Training to develop the right skills needed.

Financial Incentives:
?        Increasing motivation through financial rewards is a method that is most common when businesses rely on the quantity of the output of employees. In front office incentives are given to those who manage to rise above the expected monthly revenue.
?        Introducing fringe benefits instead of increasing wages or salaries such as company cars, private health, or interest-free loans from the business.
Non Financial Incentives:
?        Money may not be an effective motivator, although it may have some effect in the short term: employees may also see factors aside from money as prime motivators.
?        Motivation may be increased by giving employees more responsibility so that they feel their contribution is more valuable to the business and that their role is of higher importance. They also may be promised that the chance of promotion exists if they reach a certain standard or target.

Job Enlargement:
This involves expanding the job of an employee that has them doing more work of a similar nature to what they already do. This may be allowing them to complete the whole task instead of just part of it, for example, taking guest reservation as well as processing room charges. This process ideally removes the boredom out of the job by eliminating the repetitiveness out of tasks and allowing them to complete the whole process, further increasing their responsibility.

Job Rotation
This involves allowing employees to change the nature of their job periodically. In front office, a front desk assistant can be rotated into departments like Bell Desk, Reservation, Cashier, Telephone etc
The purpose of this is that the employee, again, is satisfied by reduced boredom and also motivated by the achievement of increased skills.

Job Enrichment
Similar to job enlargement, you can enrich an employee?s job by expanding their tasks to give a higher level of responsibility in the nature of work they do.
For example The Task list can be expanded to include tasks like promoting the hotel?s restaurants through guest interaction, upselling, handling guest complaints etc

Training

?        Hotels have management training programmes, such as Taj?s  IHCL, EIH of Oberoi, and The Park, which serves as an apt training ground. Once an individual has entered the system, they are given an induction and subsequently trained, a stepping-stone to ensure peak performance. Perhaps one factor which requires utmost attention initially is training an employee to understand the corporate philosophy and culture of a property and brand, says Andrew Mensforth, general manager, Park Hyatt Goa, without which an employee can never completely integrate himself as a part of the other associates, and be completely in and comfortable sync with the hotel's unique service style.
?        Developing the synergy between appraisals and training helps in retaining right people at right place on right time

Numbers and Hours:
How many Front Office Executives are needed? One Executive should be able to handle 50-60 occupies rooms. If he/she was also was taking care of cashiering then the ratio would have reduced. This depends upon:
?        The occupancy rate
?        Average length of stay: long stayers lesser burden
?        The pattern of activity: Departure and Arrivals peaks could mostly be in early morning and afternoons. Airport hotels may have more even distribution of arrival departure patterns.
?        The amount of personal Contact required: This could be reduced by preregistering groups, taking care of Groups by Group Organisers, Automated check-in, check-out. FITs may welcome these innovations but others may still want the personal touch.
?        The character of Hotel: A few minutes wait may be ok in smaller town leisure hotel, but not in busy city centre environment.
?        The technology being employed: manual methods more expensive because of clerical work.

Activity patterns of the main front office areas:
1.     Booking requests for a large international hotel may come in at any time of the day or night, but mainly during normal business hours.
2.     The telephone operators will also be busiest during business hours.
3.     The desk should be staffed throughout the 24 hour period but least during the night shift. The main peaks will come during the check-outs (7.30 -10.30 am) and arrivals (1.00 to 7.00 pm)
4.     The control process should go on all the time, but the natural time for general review is the middle of the night. Known as Night Audit.
This activity pattern calls for a series of shifts. With a normal working day of 8 hours, the 24 hour period can be divided into three consecutive and overlapping shifts namely:
?        Morning Shift starting between 6.30 to 7.30 hrs.
?        Afternoon shift from 14.30 to 15.30 hrs.
?        A night shift (graveyard shift) from 22.00 to 23.00 hrs.
Sometimes a general shift from 9 am to 6 pm is also given to few employees which is the normal business hours. Employees in this shift are able to attend to many back office activities during this period. It may be more suitable for older, experienced person with a family, or could be introduced as a part of the rota scheme to allow staff a ?normal day? at regular intervals.

Duty Roaster and Staff allocation:
Arranging staff rotas is one of the most challenging duties of the front office manager. Following considerations need to be made for this:
?        Holiday entitlements
?        Advance preparation of rota
?        Right mix of youth and experienced staff
?        Occupancy forecasts need to studied before preparation of a rota.

Overtime
Minimum work hours are 9 hrs as per factories act 1948.  An employee working more than 9 hours is eligible for payment as over time or compensatory off  as per company policies. (Implemented in hotel industry from 2009 onwards).
Crisis Management:
Crisis Front Office Management should develop property specific procedures for responding to emergencies such as fires, natural calamities, medical emergencies, crimes, terrorist activities, threat or attack. Regular review of Crisis Management must be done by Management. Front Office staff who react quickly and efficiently to an emergency situation may help in preventing the damage.

Interdepartmental Communication
Pivotal role in delivering quality service.
The Front Office communicates guests? requirements to other departments which work in close coordination and cooperation to deliver required products and services. Communication of Front Office with following departments is maintained for desired service standards:
Housekeeping:
The FO and Hk department communicate with each other for the following information:
Room Status: Both these departments must coordinate on the room status report. Hk department prepares an occupancy report which is sent to the front office department where it is tallied with room status records. This helps to:
?        Update room status
?        Find Sleepers (a room from which the guest has checked out but is showing as an occupied in front office status records).
?        Know the exact house count
?        Coordinate in guest room change.
Security concerns: Housekeeping personnel must inform the front office in case of any suspicious activity.
Special Arrangements: Guests request for additional or special amenities during their stay like extra blanket, soap, shampoo, iron to the front desk which must be conveyed at the earliest to the hk department. For special guests extra amenities? request like flower arrangement, bath robe etc must be conveyed by the reservations or front desk to housekeeping. Special arrangements for VIPs, groups and crews also need to be conveyed to housekeeping.

Food and Beverage Department:
The Front Office department informs the F & B department about the arrival departure of guests, which helps them to plan their work schedule and staff requirement. It also informs F & B about special food arrangements and parties. The Front Desk sends information about:
?        The arrival and departure of guests
?        Setting up bars in VIP rooms
?        Special arrangements lile cookies, fruit basket, and assorted dry fruits.
?        In-house and expected VIPs, and corporate guests.
?        In house and expected groups
?        In house and expected crews
?        The scanty baggage in house guests; all points of sales are notified to receive all payment in cash from these guests.
?        Groups and guests with bookings of specific meal plans.

Sales and Marketing Department:
Front Office department coordinates with S & M for the following information:
?        Guest histories
?        Room reservations records
?        Current room availability status
?        Group, corporate and crew bookings
?        Setting the transient and bulk room sales.
Front Office must keep information on room availability status and guest histories accurate and updated. This helps S & M dept. to make packages to sell in the future period.

Engineering and Maintenance:
Front Office communicated with E & M dept. for proper upkeep of systems and equipments installed in the department. Front Office also informs E & M of any repair work in an occupied guest room, they also work put a schedule so that the maintenance work is carried out in the absence of the guest in the room. Such complains are logged in repair work orders? book. A request from the guest regarding maintenance is always followed up by the Front Office staff and time of completion is also noted.

Security:
The Front Desk is a link between guests and other departments of the hotel. When a guest has security concerns like fire, robbery, theft, or any other emergency, the front desk should explain the emergency procedure to the guest while calling on security personnel to resolve the problem.
Finance Controller
The front desk provides a daily summary of the financial transactions after night auditing to the finance controller. The information provided by the front desk helps the finance controller to make the budget and allocate resources to the current financial year. Financial data for billing and maintenance of credit card ledgers is given by front desk. High balance report etc help F. controller to formulate policies and strategies to recover the money from the guest and companies.

Human Resource
For growth and development of front office employees, a close coordination between the two departments is necessary. The front office informs HR about the requirement of new staff, training requirement for the new staff, fresher training for the existing ones, and cross training requirements. The Front IOffice prepares the guidelines for the selection of its employees.
Banquets:
Front Office coordinates with the banquets for putting information and placing directional signals for various functions happening at the hotel. The Banquets department sends the function prospectus to the front office so that in case any communication is received by the FO of the hosting parties, it may be sent to the Banquets.

Thus besides communicating with guests, the front office also communicates with internal customers who are the other departments of the hotel.

Total Quality management in Hospitality

Total means each and every person of the hotel, Quality is the degree of excellence of products or services and management is an art of dealing with or controlling things or people.

And so, TQM describes a management approach to long-term success through customer satisfaction. It is a continuous process of improvement of Quality and Processes.
The concept of TQM was originated after World War II, when US completely destroyed the economy of Japan by the A- bomb. Americans sent their best scientist William Edwards Deming (1900-1993) to Japan.  He was a statistician and business consultant whose methods helped hasten Japan's recovery after the Second World War and beyond.

Hospitality is a very unique Industry, a hotel must adopt TQM practices to be at the top, one must keep implementing new strategies to be unique form others. There are various examples where Hotels have proved themselves to be adopting various Quality measures like Installing Solar panels in ITC Grand Chola, following employee empowerment in Ritz Carlton, etc.

Five Pillars of TQM:
1.       Product/ Service- A hotel must have functional products and exceptional services. It is important to upgrade products from time to time and to train employees to provide the world class service to their guests.
  1. Organization- Every company has a big hierarchy. And it is very essential to build a strong organisation by hiring good and experienced employees and to train them from time to time.
  2. Commitment- Everyone from top to bottom objective must be to achieve the goal of the organisation.
  3.  Process- Hotels follow standard operating procedures for every work. If everyone follows the procedure provided by the employee, the system will be error free.
  4. Leadership- The hierarchy must have good leaders. Mostly companies are known by good leaders and vice versa.

Practices of Total Quality Management
1.     Japanese 5- S practice
2.     Business Process Re-Engineering
3.     Control Circles.
4.     Employee Empowerment.
5.     Six Sigma.
6.     Benchmarking.

Japanese 5 S practice
Seiri (sort): It means sorting the equipment?s of the workplace and removing not required and defected pieces.
Seiton (systematize): Putting all the sorted items in their place and providing easy access so that they are ready for use when needed.
Seiso (sanitize): An action to clean the workplace daily (equipment, work area, mind, preventive maintenance)
Seiketsu (standardize): Involves creating guidelines for keeping the workplace organized, orderly and clean.
Shitsuke (self-discipline): Involves training and discipline, to ensure that everyone follows the 5 S standards.

Business Process Re-Engineering (BPR)

BPR is through rethinking of all business processes, job definitions, management systems, organization structure, work flow, and underlying assumptions and beliefs.

BPR's main objective is to break away from old ways of working, and redesign of processes to achieve improvements in critical areas (such as cost, quality, service, and response time) through in-depth use of technology.

It challenges managers to rethink traditional work methods and commit themselves to customer focused processes.

It uses recognized techniques for improving business results and questions the effectiveness of the traditional organizational structure.

Benchmarking

Another method, companies implement for continuous improvement is by following footsteps of the organisation they admire (practices of companies considered best in class). For example, Park Group of hotels want to work on their customer satisfaction, they will start looking for a company which is best in customer satisfaction. Let?s say, they find The Oberio group of hotels the best. Park hotel will start following all the rules and policies used by Oberoi hotels. Also they can follow Amazon International, as Benchmark Company does not have to be in the same business, as long as it excels at something that the company doing the study wishes to emulate.

Team Approach/ Quality Circles

TQM stresses that quality is an organizational effort. To facilitate the solving of quality problems, it places great emphasis on teamwork. The use of teams is based on the old adage that two heads are better than one. Using techniques such as brainstorming, discussion, and quality control tools, teams work regularly to correct problems. The contributions of teams are considered vital to the success of the company. For this reason, companies set aside time in the workday for team meetings.

Teams vary in their degree of structure and formality, and different types of teams solve different types of problems. One of the most common types of teams is the quality circle, a team of volunteer production employees and their supervisors whose purpose is to solve quality problems. The circle is usually composed of eight to ten members, and decisions are made through group consensus.
The teams usually meet weekly during work hours in a place designated for this purpose. They follow a present process for analysing and solving quality problems. Open discussion is promoted, and criticism is not allowed. Although the functioning of quality circles is friendly and casual, it is serious business. Quality circles are not mere talk sessions. Rather, they do important work for the company and have been very successful in many firms.

Employee Empowerment

One of the best strategy is to empower all employees to find a better solution themselves. With the old concept of quality, employees were afraid to identify problems for fear that they would be reprimanded.

This new concept of quality, Employee Empowerment, provides incentives for employees to identify quality problems. Employees are rewarded for uncovering quality problems.

Ritz Carlton luxury hotels and resorts are practicing employee empowerment from long. As per this, they allow their employees to handle customer complaints themselves, and not to seek permission from senior. And so, Ritz-Carlton luxury hotels and resorts, are very famous for providing outstanding services to their guests and treating their employees as Internal customers.

Workers are empowered to make decisions relative to quality in the production process. They are considered a vital element of the effort to achieve high quality. Their contributions are highly valued, and their suggestions are implemented. In order to perform this function, employees are given continual and extensive training in quality measurement tools.

To further stress the role of employees in quality, TQM differentiates between external and internal customers. External customers are those that purchase the company's goods and services. Internal customers are employees of the organization who receive goods or services from others in the company. For example, the packaging department of an organization is an internal customer of the assembly department. Just as a defective item would not be passed to an external customer, a defective item should not be passed to an internal customer.

Six Sigma

Six Sigma is a statistical concept of Total quality Management, wherein Company says thy will produce Zero defects in their products. It means a company is focusing on upgrading their products and side by side challenging on producing zero defects.
Six Sigma has only recently been introduced to the hospitality industry, though, when Starwood Hotels adopted it into their hotels in 2001. Six sigma is a statistically based business strategy that companies attempt to apply to help in reducing defects in products and services. In the case of the hospitality industry, in theory, it could be used to improve services from hotel check-in to waiting times for tables in restaurants. Starwood was the first hospitality company to introduce it. They have implemented a fully developed program that starts at the corporate level and identifies key people at the unit level to champion it

The six steps of achieving Six Sigma are as follows:
  •     Creating and identifying strategic business objectives
  •     Creating core and sub processes
  •     Identifying process owners
  •     Creating and validating performance measures
  •     Collecting data on performance measures
  •     Determining and prioritizing projects for improvement.

  • Implementation of the Six sigma philosophy on the Front Office department of the hotel are:
Reduce wait time during peak check-in time
Reduce wait time during peak check-out time
Eliminate billing errors and improve accuracy
Accuracy of information
Increase customer delight at the Executive Club

Implementation of the Six sigma philosophy in the food and beverage area of a hotel or a restaurant:
  •     To maintain optimal inventory
  •     Minimize wastage/pilferage
  •     Standardized output of Food and Beverage
  •     Reduce the time from order to service
  •     Optimal utilization of current product mix (F&B/Outlets) to increase revenue.

Most of the young people in India are concentrating on the flying clubs as they could experience many advantageous features with a high salary. Many numbers of best pilots have originated from Gujarat Flying Club which is one of the best flying schools in India. Every year, the best maintenance engineers, flight engineers, and flight instructors are well trained with a number of them holding honorable positions in military services and Special Forces. The new team members are to be specialized with the ground training before they are transferred to the cockpit. Northern India flying club provides the best coaching for the freshers by providing all types of coaching which may be classroom, online, or distance based. The Coimbatore aviation training academy is one of the leading flying schools in Tamil Nadu providing better quality education and providing different types of training depending upon the choice of people.

This training academy has trained a larger number of flight engineers and instructors who got placed in the best flight companies of India. Some of the facilities provided by the Coimbatore aviation training academy are classroom coaching, conducting online exams, providing better study guides, appointing certified faculties, and providing audio-visual aids.

The main objective of the Environmental organization is to prevent and keep nature uncastrated. The Environmental organization is meant for preserving the natural resources of plants and animals, their living places, and their foods through the protection of deforestation, debasement, and putting an end to such destruction. The organizations help to develop and to implement the technique made for reducing the usage of fossil fuels, preventing deforestation and climatic changes and preventing the habitat of the living organism, and to put an end to the extinction of animals. The organization makes the public learn about sufficient environmental topics like preservation of both plants and animal species, reduction in fossil fuels, renewable sources, natural farming using Bio-fertilizers, and preventing endangered species.

There are three important steps to avoid erosion and landslides namely Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle. The organization provides a review for health using herbal and natural therapies namely Wellness Review. It provides a nutritional way to enrich society using plants and stopping the usage of chemicals. Some reports state that the wellness review provides a remedy for heart failure and some heart problems, muscle contractions. Some of the renowned environment organizations in India are CPR Environmental Education Centre, M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation.

Environment institution plays a major role in accessing the difficulty caused by the interaction of the human being with the environment. The position of this institution is more complicated and not defined easily. It gives the solution to environmental problems such as a change in the climate, deforestation, loss in biological diversity which occurs due to various reasons. The institution is treated as a sort of rule, right, and the way to make a decision by the tool "new institutionalism". The policy of the book proves that the research and more studies on institutions furnish an advanced way to deal with the arising environmental problems in recent times.

Prevention and more care on the Natural resources are sure to provide a secure and safe planet in the future. Many changes in the climate and advanced technology convert wind and heat energy into another form of energy. Many international courts, assembly and bodies for judgement have been created for providing the responsibilities and the written agreement for the problems regarding the environment. Some of the well-known environment institutions in India are the Department of the Geology University of Kerala, Bombay Natural History Society, Centre of Advanced Study in Marine Biology Annamalai University, and Dept. of Marine Living Resources Andhra University.

The Environment government centers provide designing, forwarding, and coordinates the execution of environmental policies and programs. Initially, the ministry was formed to implement the program and policies regarding the conservation of diversity and the preservation of human welfare. To implement the policies some principles are followed for sustainable development and for the welfare of humans. The ministry serves as the connecting agency for various programs. The ministry is trusted and left with the issues of other programs or commissions like Global Environmental facility, commission on sustainable development concerning the environment.

The other objectives of the ministry are safeguarding and surveying the plants, animal species, prevention and control of pollution, afforestation of debasement areas, protection of the environment, and the welfare of animals. The objectives are well supported and accepted by a set of legislative and some measures made for preventing, preserving, and protecting the environment. Centre for Environment Education was formed to enlighten the significance of Environmental Education. Centre of government reform is a highly risky business that needs implementation change at the administrative level. Some of the environmental government centers in India are Forest Research Institute, Botanical Survey of India central National Herbarium, Wildlife Institute of India, and Zoological Survey of India.

Nowadays engineering is the most preferred course by most students. Engineering is a course that increases the creativity of the people in a lot of areas like art, science, and other technical aspects by providing knowledge in the same. It is a course which exists from ancient days. In ancient days people thought that only civil engineering is the word which meant for engineers. But now in this modern world, there are a lot of courses like electronics, electrical, mechanical, industry management, and material management that exist to improve the living of the people as well as to increase the creativity of the students.

There is a course called bio-medical engineering which takes care of people's health issues and offers thorough information about the instruments being used in the surgery in the medical field. There are lots of engineering colleges available in India which provide a variety of courses to improve the knowledge of the people. National Institute of Technology (NIT), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Rajalakshmi engineering college, Vellore institute of technology (VIT), and Jadavpur engineering colleges are some of them that provide a very good education and technical knowledge to the students. There exist even more government and autonomous engineering colleges that offer great engineering education to the pupil.

The Engineering colleges provide Higher education in a specific course. There are many courses namely Electronics, Electrical, Civil, Aeronautical and Information Technology. The individual course provides more detail and studies in the branch. There are many Engineering colleges in India. Engineering quality at the Bachelor's level includes the Bachelor of Science program in Technology. These programs centralize the quality or it offers significance in quality. They provide practical and technical concepts to lead an associate-level as well as enrich the student with theoretical and management concepts which make them be prepared for the job. It's mandatory that the bachelor's programs should be completed with general education and foundation engineering courses which include courses in Mathematics, Technical studies, science, and English.

Quality engineering incorporates the students with training in a lab with classroom instructions and computer applications. Most programs are to be completed as projects. In addition to the core curriculum, the students should have completed supporting courses like physics, Economics, Calculus, and Chemistry. The courses which are common to all Bachelor's Degrees are Statistical process engineering, Engineering economics, Computer-aided drafting and design, Advanced technical writing, Management of manufacturing operations. Some of the colleges in India are the Noida Institute of Engineering & Technology, Shri Krishna Institute of Engg, & Technology.

Education plays a major role in shaping up the future of an individual, in turn, their home, in turn, their town, in turn, their city and state, and in turn, it shapes up the future of the nation. Hence it can be said that the education system in India is very important. There are different levels of in education India. The many types of education are school education in India, higher education in India, and distance education in India. Also, there is 'n' number of college in India which strives hard to impart quality education to fellow Indians. Some colleges have grown to become deemed universities in India, which offer all kinds of degrees.

There are hospitality colleges that open up opportunities to work and earn in the food business world. Most educational institutions are controlled by state and local governments or by the central government. Government offers free education to people until the primary classes, as education is the necessary foundation for bringing up good and better citizens of India. But further college education has become a costly deal. Banks offer loans to pursue higher studies in college and they wait until the education is done and the debtor can start repaying after finishing studies and joining work.

Krishi Vigyan Kendra is an agricultural-based research center and frontline extension center. It is financed by the ICA also known as the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. These Kendras support agricultural-based workers and their production. They also help farmers and agri-based workers to invest more into production and cropping. Their main idea is to support these farmers by giving ideas and tips from their research papers works. Krishi Vigyan Kendra works to influence the farmers and their functionaries and their external system and support their funds and other facilities. These Kendras are located in many districts across different parts of India.

There are many Kendras situated in agriculture-based states and their rice bowl districts. Andhra Pradesh has twenty-two different Krishi Vigyan Kendras and spread across Nellore, Cuddapah, Vizag, and other major districts. Bihar also has many KVK?s and very important fully working ones are situated in the Araira, Purnea, Rohtas districts. These Krishi Vigyan Kendras support poor farmers and their families. They help them sell their food products for a better rate and give tips and techniques to increase crop production. Krishi Vigyan Kendra in the Kannur district in Kerala is taken care of by the Pannaiyur under Kerala Agricultural University.

India is a country where prime importance is given to education since it is very important for improving society both commercially and morally. Presently education in India is provided through schools that are spread all over the country. This has lead to improvement in the literacy rate in India where the state of Kerala leads the nation with a literacy rate of more than 90 percent. Schools provide education through various levels such as primary, secondary, undergraduate, and postgraduate. The board and standard of education also vary between different schools. Colonial schools were different from present schools. They had a different system of education where a schoolmaster taught everyone.

The schools were small comprising of a single room and were dominated by boys initially. Later realizing the importance of education, girls started to go to schools. Punishments were severe in colonial schools if students were found to misbehave. Barasat Peary Charan Sarkar Government High School at Kolkata, Bishop Cotton Girls School at Bangalore, Karnataka, Loreto Convent at Darjeeling, West Bengal, Mindapore Collegiate School at Midnapore, West Bengal, and Bishop Cotton School at Shimla are some of the colonial schools in India.

Education is a more important aspect when compared to any other aspects for the people to prosper in their life. This in turn will lead to the betterment of the society and the progress of the nation. Particularly for a developing country like India, education proves to be indispensable as it leads to enlightenment in society. In our country, education is provided through schools. Some are owned by the public sector while others are owned by the private sector. Through constant efforts, the government has been able to spread literacy to around two-thirds of the population in our country and there has been a significant enhancement in primary education to children. There are quite a number of Christian schools in India.

These schools not only provide quality education but also help children in discovering what type of fait is best and suited to them. Christian schools happen to be a little costlier when compared to others but they do help students with tuition assistance policies. They help to mold the character of students as they grow. Acts Institute (Christian training school) at Bangalore, Karnataka, and Athens Boarding School of Mission at Darjeeling, West Bengal are popular Christian schools in India. All Saints Diocesan School at stadium road, Meghalaya, Bethel Bible Institute at Salem, Tamil Nadu, Bombay Scottish School at Mumbai, Maharashtra, and Cathedral Mission High School at Calcutta are other Christian schools in India.

In that aspect agricultural universities are very important, because the economic development of India depends on agricultural growth only.

If we want a stable country then we should become a self-sustainable country in food management. There are many agricultural universities in India that are producing talented engineers, but the fact is nowadays students are more interested in doing technical graduation courses only.

The view among the students of India should change. Every state has its own Agriculture University. Tamil Nadu agriculture university, Punjab Agriculture University, Rajasthan Agriculture University, Kerala Agriculture University, and central agriculture university in Manipur were some of the universities governed by the respective states. There are also plenty of private universities in India. There are also veterinary universities in India.

Tamil Nadu animal and veterinary science university in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal animal sciences and fisheries university in West Bengal, and animal sciences and veterinary university were some of the veterinary universities in India. In Jharkhand, there is a university called birsa agricultural university situated in dhoni's hometown is one of the famous agricultural universities.

News

? The Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) ?Sajag? got commissioned into the Indian Coast Guard.
? National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on said that the force will have greater responsibilities in the years to come as India?s maritime zones expand to include entitlements in the extended continental shelf.
? The Coast Guard plays an important role in supporting neighbouring countries in the Indian Ocean Region.
? The concept of forming the Coast Guard was conceived after the 1971 war, when it was assessed that maritime borders are equally vital as land borders. The blueprint for a multi-dimension Coast Guard was conceived by the visionary Rustamji Committee.

Indian Coast Guard

? The Indian Coast Guard is a multi-mission organization, conducting round-the-year real-life operations at sea.
? The Indian Coast Guard was formally established on 1 February 1977 by the Coast Guard Act, 1978 of the Parliament of India.
? It operates under the Ministry of Defence.

United Nations Convention on the Laws of the Sea (UNCLOS)

? UNCLOS is the only international convention that stipulates a framework for state jurisdiction in maritime spaces.
? It provides the backbone for offshore governance by coastal states and those navigating the oceans.

About Maritime Zones:

? ?Nag Committee? was set up in 1970, to examine the growing menace of smuggling and recommended the need for a separate marine force to deal with smuggling activities.
? In 1972, the United Nations Convention on the Laws of the Sea (UNCLOS) awarded Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) to all coastal states.
? United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), also known as Law of the Sea divides marine areas into five main zones namely- Internal Waters, Territorial Sea, Contiguous Zone, Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and the High Seas.

Different Maritime Zones

Baseline
? It is the low-water line along the coast as officially recognized by the coastal state.

1. Internal Waters:

? Internal waters are waters on the landward side of the baseline from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured.
? Each coastal state has full sovereignty over its internal waters as like its land territory. Examples of internal waters include bays, ports, inlets, rivers and even lakes that are connected to the sea.

2. Territorial Sea:

? The territorial sea extends seaward up to 12 nautical miles (nm) from its baselines.
? A nautical mile is based on the circumference of the earth and is equal to one minute of latitude. It is slightly more than a land measured mile (1 nautical mile = 1.1508 land miles or 1.85 km).
? The coastal states have sovereignty and jurisdiction over the territorial sea.
? These rights extend not only on the surface but also to the seabed, subsoil, and even airspace.

3. Contiguous Zone:

? The contiguous zone extends seaward up to 24 nm from its baselines.
? It is an intermediary zone between the territorial sea and the high seas.
? The coastal state has the right to both prevent and punish infringement of fiscal, immigration, sanitary, and customs laws within its territory and territorial sea.
?, Unlike the territorial sea, the contiguous zone only gives jurisdiction to a state on the ocean?s surface and floor. It does not provide air and space rights.

4. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ):

? Each coastal State may claim an EEZ beyond and adjacent to its territorial sea that extends seaward up to 200 nm from its baselines.
? Within its EEZ, a coastal state has:
> Sovereign rights for the purpose of exploring, exploiting, conserving and managing natural resources, whether living or nonliving, of the seabed and subsoil.
> Rights to carry out activities like the production of energy from the water, currents and wind.
? Unlike the territorial sea and the contiguous zone, the EEZ only allows for the above-mentioned resource rights. It does not give a coastal state the right to prohibit or limit freedom of navigation or overflight, subject to very limited exceptions.

Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana📚

Militarisation of the Arctic

Why in News?

13 states have started distributing foodgrains under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY)

Key Highlights

✨On April 23, the government had announced its decision to restart the PMGKAY to provide free-of-cost additional 5 kg foodgrains per person per month to the beneficiaries, who are covered under the National Food Security Act, 2013 (NFSA, 2013) over and above their monthly entitlement for two months, May and June.
✨However, the new version of the PMGKAY lacks one of its important components?free-of-cost 1 kg pulses per month to each household covered under the NFSA.

Background

✨The PMGKAY was first announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman as part of the government?s Rs 1.70 lakh crore relief package under ?Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana for the poor to help them fight the battle against coronavirus? on March 26, 2020.
✨Initially, the scheme was for three months ? May, June and July ? but later it was extended till November 2020.
✨The Centre had also launched a separate scheme to provide free 5 kg foodgrain per person per month to stranded migrants for two months.
✨However, the ministry has ruled out the possibility of a similar scheme this time.

About One Nation One Ration Card Scheme

✨Under the scheme, public distribution system (PDS) beneficiaries will be able to draw ration from any biometric verification enabled fair price shop across states and Union territories covered by it.
✨According to the ministry, all states and union territories except four ? Assam, Chhattisgarh, Delhi and West Bengal ? have implemented the scheme.

January 30: World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day💎

Why in News

✨The ongoing 74th World Health Assembly declared 30th January as ?World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Day.

✨The proposal to recognise the day was floated by the United Arab Emirates. It was adopted unanimously by the delegates. The first World NTD Day was celebrated informally in 2020.
The World Health Assembly is the decision-making body of World Health Organization (WHO).

Key Points

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD):

✨NTDs are a group of infections that are most common among marginalised communities in the developing regions of Africa, Asia and the Americas. They are caused by a variety of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, protozoa and parasitic worms.
✨NTDs are especially common in tropical areas where people do not have access to clean water or safe ways to dispose of human waste.
✨These diseases generally receive less funding for research and treatment than malaises like tuberculosis, HIV-AIDS and malaria.
Examples of NTDs are: snakebite envenomation, scabies, yaws, trachoma, Leishmaniasis and Chagas disease etc.

✨London Declaration on NTDs:

✨It was adopted on 30th January, 2012 to recognise the global burden of NTDs.
✨Officials from the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Bank, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, representatives from leading global pharmaceutical companies as well as representatives of several national governments met at London?s Royal College of physicians to pledge to end the diseases.
WHO?s New Roadmap for 2021?2030:
✨From measuring process to measuring impact.
From disease-specific planning and programming to collaborative work across sectors.
✨From externally driven agendas reliant to programmes that are country-owned and country-financed.

NTD Scenario:

✨NTDs affect more than a billion people globally.
✨They are preventable and treatable. However, these diseases - and their intricate interrelationships with poverty and ecological systems - continue to cause devastating health, social and economic consequences.
✨There are 20 NTDs that impact over 1.7 billion people worldwide.
✨India carries the largest burden of at least 11 of these diseases, with parasitic illnesses like kala-azar and lymphatic filariasis affecting millions of people throughout the country ? often the poorest and most vulnerable.
Indian Initiatives to Eliminate NTDs:
✨The Accelerated Plan for Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis (APELF) was launched in 2018, as part of intensifying efforts towards the elimination of NTDs.
✨A WHO-supported regional alliance established by the governments of India, Bangladesh, and Nepal in 2005 to expedite early diagnosis and treatment of the most vulnerable populations and improve disease surveillance and control of sandfly populations (Kala-azar).
✨India has already eliminated several other NTDs, including guinea worm, trachoma, and yaws.

one of the oldest stone Buddhist monuments in India stands inside an ancient Buddhist complex, situated on top of a hill in Sanchi.

The Great Stupa at Sanchi, also known as Stupa No.1, was commissioned by the Mauryan Emperor, Ashoka, in the 3rd century BCE.  With a height of 54 feet and a pedestal diameter of 120 feet, it is one of the largest of its kind in India.

The grand structure still inspires today surrounded by the remains of smaller stupas, monasteries, and temples that were built as the religious community grew in the centuries after the site was founded.

TORANAS:
The Great Stupa?s four elaborately-carved Toranas (gateways), one in each direction, were erected around 35 BCE.

Elephants support the architraves above the columns, while there are delicately carved Yakshis (maidens) on each side. The beautifully carved figure of a Yakshi hanging from an architrave on the Eastern Gateway is one of Sanchi?s best-known images.

The numerous panels relate various events of the life of the Buddha. Ashoka?s life as a Buddhist, with scenes of the Buddha?s birth and another representation of the Great Departure.

Sanchi Stupa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a landmark structure in tracing the evolution of Indian architecture starting with the Maurya period - is 48km from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
